Seafire
Recently had the pleasure of checking out Seafire at the very first Plus Festival (Denton Math Rock Festival) at Killer’s Tacos in Denton, where over 20 local & regional math rock bands were showcased, hosted by BLVR Booking. Their lineup includes Tia Culbreth on guitar, Alonso Contreras on Bass & Lawrence Lazenby on drums (though Cameron Sather filled in for Plus Fest). Their debut EP dropped earlier this year in May, entitled Tunnel’s Vision. Listen to their CHON-influenced style on Spotify, iTunes & Soundcloud.
Luna Luna
This band has been blowing up in Dallas, most recently opening for Boy Pablo to a sold-out crowd at Deep Ellum Art Company and being featured on the Cambridge Stage at House of Blues’ Local Brews, Local Grooves showcase. Singles “80’s Tune” and “You and I” were released in 2017 (the same year the band formed), quickly grabbing Spotify listeners’ attention and skyrocketing to a combined over 300,000 plays. Their debut album For Lovers Only released in March this year, perpetuating their self-described “romantic & nostalgic” sound. Catch them live 9/21/18 at the Nasher Sculpture Center, and an all-acoustic set “Orange Capo” show at Coco Andre 9/29/18
Song Dynasty
This collaborative project is led by Taiwanese vocalist Li Lui and Canadian jazz guitarist Ben Holt that combines elements of western music with Chinese lyrics. I had a chance to catch some songs when they played at Shoals Sound & Service in Deep Ellum last Sunday, Li Lui’s charming voice singing words I couldn’t understand yet blending so smoothly with the sweet jazz sound. The pair took their renditions to Canada, Taiwan and the American Pacific Northwest with a touring stint earlier this year.
